Endowing Chairs and Professorships

There is nothing that impacts the experience of a student more than the inspiration that comes from a gifted professor. It is here, in the dynamic of this relationship, that the true quality of an academic institution lives and breathes.

Hiring and retaining the best teachers and scholars in America will enhance Drake’s already outstanding reputation.

By enhancing the quality of our faculty – increasing the number of endowed professorships and investing in their research and scholarly activities – we are sending a message to the world that Drake is among the finest universities in the United States. Therefore, distinctlyDrake seeks to endow 26 new faculty positions, which will include professorships, distinguished professorships, chairs and distinguished chairs.

Strengthen an Established Tradition
Throughout our history we have demonstrated our commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. In the past several years alone we have received generous gifts that have made it possible to endow the Fred and Patty Turner Professor of Jazz Studies, the Peggy Fisher and Larry Stelter Chair of Magazine Journalism, the Herb and Karen Baum Chair in Ethics and the Professions and a directorship of the Drake Relays in honor of Franklin "Pitch" Johnson.

Sustain and Enhance Academic Excellence
By adding 26 endowed professorships, we will send a clear message to the region, the nation and the world – Drake is among the best. At the same time, investing in our faculty in this way will ease year-to-year budgeting and planning pressures and bring a level of prestige to our entire community.

Develop Faculty Promise
The entire Drake community benefits when we invest in the professional development and scholarly pursuits of our faculty. By investing in our faculty’s ability to conduct research and take part in the national and international dialogue, we will strengthen the spirit of inquiry, perpetuate academic excellence and foster high-quality connections between students and professors.
